In part 1, you got acquainted with the basic knowledge of adverbs and 4 types of common adverbs in Vietnamese, what about part 2?

2. Summary of commonly used adverbs in daily communication 

2.5 Adverbs of frequency

Adverbs of frequency are used to describe the degree of quality, things, state, condition, relationship, etc.

Example: Cô ấy đôi khi quên chìa khóa nhà khi ra ngoài (She sometimes forgets her house keys when she goes out).

Adverbs of frequency generally place in front of a verb, subject or sometimes stand behind an object. Some adverbs such as always, ever, never usually stand in front of a verb, almost never at the beginning or end of a sentence.

Here are some adverbs of frequency that you need to learn by heart to communicate with Vietnamese people:

Luôn luôn (Always)
  • Tôi luôn nghe nhạc mỗi khi có thời gian rảnh (I always listen to music when I have free time).
Thường xuyên (Usually, Frequently, Often)
  • Tôi thường xuyên đi chơi cùng bạn bè mỗi cuối tuần (I often/ usually/ frequently go out with my friends every weekend).
Thỉnh thoảng, đôi khi (Sometimes. Occasionally)
  • Bố tôi đôi khi phải đi công tác xa (My father sometimes has to go on business trips).
  • Mẹ tôi thỉnh thoảng sẽ làm bánh cho cả nhà (My mother occasionally makes cakes for the whole family).
Hiếm khi (Seldom, Rarely)
  • Em tôi hiếm khi đi chơi về muộn vì đường về nhà rất tối (My brother rarely/ seldom comes home late because the way home is very dark).
Không bao giờ (Never)
  • Tôi không bao giờ nói chuyện với người lạ ở trên đường (I never talk to strangers on the street).

2.6 Conjunctive adverbs

Some conjunctive adverbs are usually used as a conjunction, connecting two clauses or sentences together.

In a sentence, normally, conjunctive adverbs stand at the beginning of the sentence in order to connect 2 sentences together or in the middle to connect 2 clauses.

Thêm nữa, Hơn nữa (Furthermore)
  • Đồ ăn nhanh ngày càng rẻ, hơn nữa nó còn rất tiện lợi (Fast food is getting cheaper and cheaper, furthermore it’s very convenient).
Ngoài ra (In addition/ Additionally)
  • Ngoài một căn nhà ở quê hương, anh ấy còn có 2 căn hộ ở Hà Nội (In addition to a house in his hometown, he also has 2 apartments in Hanoi).
Kết quả là (As a result/ As a consequence)
  • Ngày hôm qua, tôi không mặc quần áo ấm. Kết quả là tôi đã bị ốm (I didn’t wear warm clothes yesterday. As a result/ As a consequence, I got sick).
Vì vậy, Do đó (Therefore// Hence/ thus)
  • Mẹ tôi là một thợ làm bánh chuyên nghiệp. Vì vậy, mẹ đều àm bánh cho cả nhà tôi vào cuối tuần (My mother is a professional baker. Therefore/ Hence my mom makes cakes for my whole family every weekend).
Trái lại (In contrast/ On the contrary)
  • Anh trai tôi thích bóng đá. Trái lại, em trai tôi thích bóng rổ (My brother loves to play football. In contrast/ On the contrary, my brother likes basketball).
Tương tự (Likewise)
  • Gia đình tôi đang dọn nhà để đón Tết và nhà hàng xóm cũng tương tự như vậy (My family is cleaning house to celebrate Tet holiday and other neighbors did likewise).

2.7. Interrogative adverbs

Interrogative adverbs are one of the most common adverbs in English, used to start a question.

They are always placed at the beginning of the sentence. Some common interrogative adverbs in spoken and written language such as:

Khi nào (When)
  • Khi nào em gái bạn đi học về? (When does your sister come home from school?)
Ở đâu (Where)
  • Chị gái bạn đang ở đâu? (Where is your sister?)
Có lẽ (Perhaps/ Maybe)
  • Có lẽ anh ấy đang ngồi đọc sách ở trong phòng (Perhaps/ Maybe he’s reading a book in his room).
Dĩ nhiên (Of course)
  • Dĩ nhiên tôi sẽ đến buổi tiệc của cô ấy (Of course I’ll go to her party).
Tại sao (Why)
  • Tại sao hôm nay Mary đi làm muộn? (Why is Mary late for work today?)
Như thế nào, Bằng cách nào (How)
  • Bạn đã làm bài tập tối qua như thế nào? (How did you do your homework last night?)

2.8. Adverbs of quantity

Adverbs of quantity in English are used to indicate the quantity of an object or thing. 

In a sentence, adverb of quantity generally stand in front of the word or phrase it modifies:

Adverb of quantity + Modified word/phrase

When used to modify a verb, these adverbs differ from adverbs of degree. Adverbs of quantity modify the quantity of an action, while adverbs of degree show the intensity of the action.

There are various adverbs of quantity in Vietnamese vocabulary, here is a table of adverbs for your reference:

Chủ yếu là (Mainly)
  • Cửa hàng này chủ yếu là bán quần áo cho nam (This store mainly sells men’s clothes).
Rất nhiều (Many)
  • Tôi có rất nhiều sách ở trong phòng (I have many books in my room).
Quá, Rất (So/ Too/ Very)
  • Thời tiết hôm nay quá xấu để ra ngoài chơi (Today’s weather is too/ so bad to go outside)
  • Cô ấy rất đẹp và tốt bụng (She is very beautiful and kind).
Hầu hết, Phần lớn (Most)
  • Hầu hết/ Phần lớn mọi người đều sợ rắn (Most people are afraid of snakes).
Khá (Pretty. Quite)
  • Anh ấy khá sốc khi nghe tin tức đó (He was quite shocked when he heard the news).
  • Cô ấy trông khá là ốm yếu (She looks pretty sick).
Đủ (Enough)
  • Em ấy đã đủ tuổi để thi bằng lái xe (She’s old enough to take the driving test).
