1. Days of the week in Vietnamese

Seven days of the week such as Thứ hai, Thứ ba,… will be called “Thứ” in Vietnamese. To say days of the week in Vietnamese, you just need to apply the following rule:

Thứ + Number in Vietnamese [from 2 to 7]

• In Vietnamese, the last day of the week will be called “Chủ nhật” not “Thứ Chủ nhật”.

And now let’s come to the tutorial on how to express the days of the month/dates in Vietnamese. “Ngày” in Vietnamese can be understood as “day of the month” or “date”.

To express “ngày” in Vietnamese, you can easily apply the following formula:

Ngày + number in Vietnamese (in numbers or in words)

Example:

• Hôm nay là ngày 21/ ngày hai mươi mốt (Today is the 21th).
• Ngày 30/ Ngày ba mươi là ngày tôi đi du lịch nước ngoài (The 30th is the day which I travel abroad). 

When we want to ask about the date in Vietnamese, we can use the formula:

“Ngày + mấy?” hoặc “Ngày + bao nhiêu?”

Example: 

• Ngày bao nhiêu bạn đi Sài Gòn? (What day do you go to Saigon?)
• Hôm qua là ngày mấy thế? (What day was it yesterday?)

3. Months of the year in Vietnamese

The equivalent of “month” in English is “tháng” in Vietnamese. We have all 12 months in a year, so do you know how to say/ask about the month in Vietnamese?

To talk about the month in Vietnamese, we have an extremely simple formula as follows:

Tháng + number in Vietnamese (in numbers or in words)

Note: In Vietnamese, tháng 1 (January), you can read in 2 ways as “Tháng một” or “Tháng Giêng”.

To ask about the month of the year, Vietnamese people often use the question phrase “tháng mấy?”. This phrase can be placed at the end of a sentence or at the beginning of a sentence without misleading the listener in terms of content.

Example:

• Tháng mấy anh đi Hà Nội? (What month do you go to Hanoi?).
• Đám cưới của họ sẽ được tổ chức vào tháng mấy? (In what month will their wedding be held?).

4. How to say year in Vietnamese

Equivalent to the word “year” in English, we have the word “năm” in Vietnamese. Don’t get confused with the number 5 (năm) in Vietnamese! When Vietnamese talk about a year, it is usually divided into 2 cases:

When you need to count the number of years for an object or event, apply the easy formula below: 

Numbers in Vietnamese (in numbers or in words) + năm

Example:

• 5 years: 5 năm/ năm năm
• 10 years: 10 năm/ mười năm

Normally, to fully express the day, month and year in spoken or written Vietnamese, we often use the formula:

Năm + Odd numbers in Vietnamese + 2 digit numbers

• năm 2021: năm hai không hai mươi mốt
• năm 1990: năm một chín chín mươi

5. How to express day – month – year in Vietnamese
