The best teaching Vietnamese method for foreigners

For foreigners encountering Vietnamese for the first time, the language can seem challenging due to its complex tones, sounds, and grammar. So, how can we teach Vietnamese effectively to foreigners? Join Jellyfish as we explore this topic in the article below!

1. The current demand for learning Vietnamese among foreigners

Vietnam is globalizing; nowadays, the number of foreigners planning to come to Vietnam to experience, travel, work, marry, and make friends is also increasing

One of the fundamental needs for foreigners coming to Vietnam is to learn Vietnamese. This helps them easily adapt to living, traveling, experiencing, working, and studying in Vietnam.

However, unlike English, Vietnamese can be quite challenging for foreigners encountering it for the first time due to its complex tones, sounds, difficult pronunciation, and diverse grammar. Therefore, teaching methods for foreigners learning Vietnamese need to be appropriate so that they can understand and communicate effectively in Vietnamese.

2. The best teaching methods for foreigners learning Vietnamese

To improve the learning Vietnamese process for foreigners, you can use the following methods:

2.1. Guide to Vietnamese alphabet

The fundamental Vietnamese knowledge for foreigners is alphabet

The Vietnamese alphabet consists of 29 letters in the following order: a, ă, â, b, c, d, đ, e, ê, g, h, i, k, l, m, n, o, ô, ơ, p, q, r, s, t, u, ư, v, x, y. This alphabet is divided as follows:

  • 12 simple vowels : a, ă, â, e, ê, i, o, ô, ơ, u, ư, y (simple vowels with diacritical marks ă, â, ê, ô, ơ and ư).
  • 17 consonants: b, c, d, đ, g, h, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, x.
  • There are four cases of semi-vowels (bán nguyên âm): oa, oe, uy, and , where o and u act as semi-vowels, serving as support for the primary vowel. This means that in these combinations, o and u are not considered as full vowels.
  • Compound Consonants: ch, gh, kh, ng, ngh, nh, ph, th, tr, gi and qu.

One of the best ways of teaching Vietnamese methods to help students remember the alphabet easily is using the English alphabet, then, adding Vietnamese letters. Thanks to that, the Vietnamese alphabet can be easily completed.

Besides, teachers should guide students in writing both lowercase and uppercase letters following the sample process, and have them practice writing and combining compound words to aid long-term retention.

2.2. What is the best way to teach foreigners to pronounce Vietnamese?

Pronunciation in Vietnamese is quite important for foreigners learning the language because while Vietnamese speakers can often understand foreign learners who make grammatical mistakes, they may not be able to comprehend the intended meaning if the pronunciation of a word is incorrect.

Vietnamese sounds are formed quite complexly, involving consonants, vowels, and tones. Initially, teachers should guide students to practice pronunciation in sequence: from individual syllables to syllable chains, and from syllable chains to sentences with natural intonation.

Additionally, teachers should encourage learners to practice speaking in various ways. This approach not only increases the students’ interest in learning but also makes the learning environment more dynamic and engaging.

2.3. How to teach listening skills to foreigners who are learning Vietnamese

If foreigners can speak but cannot understand Vietnamese, communication will encounter many difficulties. Therefore, listening skills are crucial and cannot be overlooked by teachers when teaching Vietnamese to foreigners.

To enhance listening skills, teachers can introduce learners to various resources, such as listening to dialogues related to the lesson, listening to Vietnamese music, and watching Vietnamese films.
