1. North vietnamese accent
If you are living in the North of Vietnam, you should study with a teacher in Hanoi or neighboring provinces such as Hai Phong, Hai Duong, …
Vietnamese people living in different provinces of the North, basically have the same pronunciation, eventhough there’re still some slight differences in word usage in everyday life but not significantly.
For example:
- Chilli sauce: Hanoians call them “Tương ớt”, while in some places like Hai Phong, people call them “Chí Chương”
- In addition, the people of Northen Vietnam don’t pronounce differently between s and x, r and d, tr and ch.
For example:
- Con sâu = con xâu; hoa sen = hoa xen; chim sẻ = chim xẻ; rau = dau; bức tranh = bức chanh;…
2. Central – Vietnamese Accents
Just like in the North, between the central provinces, people often use different words to indicate similar things. However, besides that, the pronunciation of the Central people mainly confuses the “question” tone with the “fall” tone.
For example:
- (lên) xã → (lên) xả, (nước) lã → (nước) lả, bã (trầu) → bả (trầu),…
If you plan to live permanently in the central provinces, study with a teacher from Da Nang or Hue. This will make it easier for you to understand and pronounce Vietnamese better.

3. Southern Vietnamese Accent
Southerners have the two most special things in their Vietnamese pronunciation, which are:
- Frequently replace “v” with “w”. For example: văn hóa → văng woá, vá → wá, quốc → wók,…
- Ignore the accompaniment: For example luật → lục, toàn → tàu, nuốt → núc,….
In Vietnam, different regions have different pronunciations.
